EM-ONE advanced microgrid to power University of Abuja

EM-ONE will design and build an advanced solar microgrid to address the challenges of unreliable power that currently affects the delivery of education to over 14,000 students at the university.

Abuja, Nigeria - Over 14,000 students studying at the University of Abuja will soon gain a higher quality of education thanks to the supply of affordable, reliable and sustainable energy. EM-ONE will build an advanced 3.1 MWp PV and 2.03 MWh storage microgrid at the university’s campus to make this possible. The project will be completed by December 2023.

This project is made possible by Nigeria’s Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and the Nigeria Electrification Project (NEP), Energizing Education Phase II. It is funded by the World Bank.

Besides helping to advance the right to quality education for all, the project also aims to help eager students build their careers in renewable energy systems. To this effect, EM-ONE will set up a state-of-the-art electro-mechanical workshop and training center at the university’s campus.

Project Details:

  • 3.1 MWp PV capacity

  • 2.03 MWh energy storage capacity

  • 5,000 MWh + of solar power generated annually

  • 2,000,000 tonnes of CO2 avoided per year

The system has been designed with built-in efficiency, intelligence and modularity. It uses tier-one equipment components from Canadian Solar, Schneider Electric and Huawei, amongst others. It will be grid-connected, maximizing the use of renewable energy to improve the overall quality of the electricity supply to the campus.

Project Partners:

The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has the mandate to improve the quality of life and economic opportunities for unserved and underserved communities through universal energy access. Energizing Education Phase II (EEP II) is an intervention under REA’s Nigeria Electrification Project that aims to implement advanced solar microgrid systems in educational institutions and healthcare facilities across Nigeria. The programme directly addresses the challenge posed by un-reliable power in education and healthcare, critical sectors for the country’s socio-economic development. The affordable, reliable, and sustainable power made possible through this programme will power effective learning, institutional operations, student residencies and access to quality healthcare.

EM-ONE is an engineering and technology firm advancing the sustainable energy transition in Africa. It has successfully deployed 50 advanced solar plus storage microgrids that power public institutions in healthcare and education over the past five years. It is the winner of AFSIA’s best commercial & industrial solar project in Africa 2021.
